“Burdens Are Lifted at Calvary” was
written after Seamen’s Mission
Chaplain visited a young seaman,
who was lying critically ill in a
Glasgow Hospital. The sailor appreciated the visit.
Before leaving, the pastor gave him
a tract. It happened to be a tract
based on “Pilgrim’s Progress,” with
a colour reproduction of “Pilgrim”
coming to the cross with a great
burden on his back. The pastor
explained that he too had carried
many a burden for far too long, but
eventually laid his sins, worries,
and anxieties at the cross. There
his sense of guilt was taken from
him. The young sailor expressed
sympathy with these emotions of
being burdened. After praying together a smile of peace and
assurance lit up his face as he said
that his burden was lifted! Later that night, the words of the
hymn - “Burdens are lifted at
Calvary” flowed from his pen.
Since then the hymn has been a
great source of blessing to many
more people. BURDENS ARE LIFTED AT CALVARY Days are filled with sorrow and care, Hearts are lonely and drear; Burdens are lifted at Calvary, Jesus is very near. Chorus Burdens are lifted at Calvary, Calvary, Calvary, Burdens are lifted at Calvary, Jesus is very near. Cast your care on Jesus today, Leave your worry and fear; Burdens are lifted at Calvary, Jesus is very near. Troubled soul, the Saviour can see, Ev’ry heartache and tear; Burdens are lifted at Calvary Jesus is very near |
